Nooooo

My daughter started saying no this weekend. She is 19 months old. We have been so pleased up until this point that her responses to questions was always yes or ya.

It truly was so much more upsetting to hear “Noo” come out of her mouth than I had expected! I’m okay when the response is appropriate, but she is responding no more than yes. I know she is a toddler. I know she is a kid and this is what they do. It still makes me sad.

“Madelyn do you want to get dressed for swim lessons?”

“Noooo”

“Do you want to go in the car?”

“Noooo”

“Do you want to take a bath?”

“Nooo”

“Do you want to build with blocks?”

“Nooo”

She’s also developed an Australian accent with her no, which makes it a tad easier to hear because it’s so cute. ๐Ÿ™‚

Where did my sweet little “ya” girl go?

  1. You could always start asking questions in the negative: Do you NOT want to get dressed for swim lessons? Using double-negatives to your advantage is a solid teacher play, though it may be dirty parent pool ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. The Australian accent sounds adorable! I remember the No phase. Every single thing was no even when you knew they really wanted some of the things. We got around the no phase a bit by offering choices instead of phrasing in yes no questions. Like, do you want a bath or a shower instead of do you want a bath now? Good luck!
